Earlier this week I spent four days in skiing in The Alps in Austria. This was only the second time I have ever been skiing but I was surprisingly pleased to find that I hadn’t forgotten everything and managed to stay on my feet MOST of the time!
As when I went to Switzerland last year, the thing that struck me most about this trip was how beautiful the mountain landscape is. I think it must be because I grew up in such a flat area and any kind of hill is such a novelty to me! We had perfect weather the whole time and looking out over the mountains in the sun is just an unreal view that pictures really cannot do justice to!
We stayed in the Kitzbühel resort in Austria, and I would definitely recommend this ski resort. It has 170km of groomed pistes, so even for a beginner like me – who stuck to blue runs with the occasional red – there was enough variety to keep me entertained the whole time. This meant that everyone was very spread out so you had a lot of room and weren’t overrun with other skiers. Even on the Saturday when the main ski lift was noticeably busier due to half term, as soon as you got onto the mountains everyone spread out and it was nice and spacious.
We flew into Innsbruck Airport from London Gatwick, and for our trip we hired a car as this was cheaper than getting a transfer. The hotel we stayed at was called Sport-Wellnesshotel Bischlof which was a lovely little find. It had less of a tourist vibe, and more of a local feel which was good. It is nestled in a beautiful location a little way up the mountain a couple of minutes drive from the town centre. Having a car was great as it meant we were not restricted to shuttle bus times and gave us the freedom to choose where and when we wanted to go. We were easily able to park next to the main ski lift so we didn’t have to undergo a long walk in ski boots, which is just the most unnatural way of walking!
Our hotel had a gym, indoor and outdoor pools, and a Finnish sauna which contained saunas, steam rooms, plunge pools etc. We braved the Finnish sauna in the hotel, modestly wrapped in our towels, but when an Austrian man came in bearing a bit too much skin we felt it was time to leave! We weren’t quite ready to fully embrace that part of the Austrian culture…
I would 100% recommend Kitzbühel to anyone looking to book a ski holiday as I had the most amazing time and think it had a lot to offer! I will definitely be returning 🙂
